What Does the Artist See?

Contributed by AGB member/volunteer Dorothy Parshall

Posted February 4,2016

The work of Joey Bruni, in the Gallery for February, reflects a life of pursuing his own unique view of his world. From maternal encouragement in his childhood (Mom still has much of his very early art),  through formal studies in the graphic arts, Joey's work is informed by his love of nature, his farming and his own unique perspective of what constitutes beauty.

Skilled in drafting, his creative work may lead him into a sense of meditation. Or, he may make a quick sketch come alive in minutes. He sees buildings, really sees them - sees them as beautiful regardless of their condition. The beauty of the abandoned, the uncared for, the broken down intrigues him as he looks beyond what others may see as flaws.  Through paintings, sketches, beautifully drafted drawings, Joey documents these buildings and, in his manner of looking beyond, may transform our concept of what constitutes beauty.

It is said that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", but Joey challenges us to see beauty where we might not have realized it exists, to open our eyes to a different viewing point.  Whether a "bare bones" sketch, an intricate drawing or a colourful painting, his work respects reality, with an added dimension.
