Best in Show
Evelyn Van Hoekelen
“Contemplation”
Sponsor: Town of Bancroft Award
David Smith: "This piece jumped out above the rest for a number of reasons. The brave use of a dark palette maximizing values; the informed execution of pure hue versus neutralized hues; the complimentary use of hues; the strength of the composition and use of space; the confidence in the execution of the brushstrokes."
Tracey Lee Green: "Great loose treatment of brush work. Very well executed composition and palette. Loose expressive treatment around visually pleasing execution of the work."
Best Abstract
Clasina Weese
“Façade”
Tracey Lee Green: "Very fresh, not overworked, love the underpaint showing through. Soft palette of colours work well together balance very nicely"
David Smith: "The balance of the elements, the analogous palette is light in value, making the piece feel very fresh. The Juxtaposition of the light value against the dark calligraphy of lines moves your eye around the piece offering plenty of opportunities for your eyes to rest and take in subtle details. Lively, delightful piece without being overdone."
Honorable Mention Abstract
Ingrid Monteith
“Bizarre”
David Smith: "Unexpected but fun use of mediums. I love how the piece is transformed when it’s backlit. Wonderful use of lines, great balance, fun complimentary and primary palette."
Tracey Lee Green:"Great use of colour crosses looks from tapestry and collage work. Vibrant colour, well executed."
Abstract Award Sponsor ReMax Country Classics
Best Landscape
Julie Withrow
“Autumn Lakeshore”
David Smith: "Wonderful use of value. I love the juxtaposition of the riot of forest tethered by the calm, deep serenity of the water. This small piece has lots of depth and interesting marks."
Tracey Lee Green: "Beautiful execution of oil sticks. Holds a wonderful stillness and atmosphere. Water carries a lot of depth. Well balanced colour palette. Great treatment of reflections in water."
Honorable Mention Landscape
Kathy Haycock
“Stand Tall Into the Wind”
Tracey Lee Green:"Great composition, movement in the sky. Complimentary colours, use of colour shows depth. Well executed."
David Smith: "I love the use of the split complimentary palette – it makes the center of interest jump from the canvas. Also the close values make the entire composition harmonious. Lovely use of detailed textural brushstrokes in the foreground/midground."
Landscape Award Sponsor: Marlin Horst & Margo Currie
Best Still Life/Interior
Lynne Vegter
“Under the Hemlock”
Tracey Lee Green: "Beautiful execution of fur. The eyes and playfulness of the cat draws the viewer in. Well painted all around. Very nice treatment of the snow."
David Smith: "Subtle palette, isolation of the subject, the intensity of the face juxtapositioned against the softness of the fur."
Honorable Mention Still Life/Interior
Francis Livingston
“Georgia O’Keeffe Peony”
David Smith: "The balance of the composition; the attention to details, such as value arrangement; the detail in the center of interest."
Tracey Lee Green: "Great detail, sharpness, resolution captures the softness of the flower but also shows great strength in composition and cropping of the image."
Still Life/Interior Award Sponsor: Dr. Brian and Mrs. Kim Bishop
Best Figurative
Henry Melissa Gordon
“I am a Ghost: Sister 1”
David Smith: "It’s a brave piece for many reasons; the muted palette, the dark values, the exaggeration of the familiar and the variegated linework that moves your eye around the piece without letting it leave the composition."
Tracey Lee Green: "Very strong colour use, bold patterning. Love the well executed dark palette. The expression on the face – very creative treatment of portrait."
Honorable Mention Figurative
Allan O’Marra
“Swoosh 2”
Tracey Lee Green: "Technically fantastic, flawless composition. Just beautifully executed all around. Perfect colour balance, palette."
David Smith: "Fun subject, beautiful, cool palette juxtaposed against the warm skin and excellent execution of composition balanced against the center of interest."
